The Time for Garden Suites is Now! 

An official decision has been issued by the Ontario Land Tribunal on the City of Toronto's motion to dismiss the appeal made by a group of residents associations, that prolonged the passing of the Garden Suite bylaw. 

On February 2nd, 2022, Toronto City Council implemented a policy change that would expand housing options for Torontonians by permitting homeowners to build Garden Suites on properties in most residential zones across the city. 

Ontario Land Tribunal Decision

While many considered the decision to be long overdue in a city desperate for imaginative, sustainable ways to face the housing crisis, it was put on hold when a group of residents associations joined forces to bring forth an appeal. Homeowners began to fear their ability to aid the housing crisis, provide accommodation for loved ones, or make additional income through rentals would be hindered. While there was a delay, the appeal did not derail the implementation of this important policy!

 

Thankfully, homeowners can stop waiting, as the Ontario Land Tribunal has dismissed the appeal of the legislation this week. The order from the OLT is effective immediately.
